The Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization (AHI) will offer an adult education course, “Abraham Lincoln: Leader and Legend.” Taught by AHI Resident Fellow Dr. David Frisk, the course is free of charge and will be held Monday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p. m., from September 11 to December 11, at AHI headquarters, 21 West Park Row, Clinton, New York.
The course will cover Lincoln’s career, including the historical context of his election to the presidency and the Civil War. Among the topics: Lincoln as self-made man; Lincoln as politician; Lincoln as prophet of equality; Lincoln as constitutionalist; Lincoln as executive and commander in chief; Lincoln on slavery and emancipation; and Lincoln in historical memory.
The course will combine lecture and discussion. About twenty-five pages of reading will be assigned per week. There is no coursework. Required readings will be provided free of charge. Refreshments are also provided. High-school students and their teachers are most welcome. Teacher credit is available.
Dr. Frisk, a Resident Fellow at the AHI since 2013, holds a Ph.D. in political science from the Claremont Graduate University and has previously taught AHI classes on modern statesmanship and leadership, presidential elections, America’s “red-blue” divide, the 1960s, conservative thought, and the U.S. Constitution. He is the author of the acclaimed biography If Not Us, Who? William Rusher, National Review, and the Conservative Movement (ISI Books, 2012).
