Mary Grabar, Resident Fellow at The Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization (AHI), has published “A Howard Zinn Pandemic” in American Greatness, a blog devoted to American politics. Grabar’s article tracks how the Zinn Education Project (ZEP) and other organizations are using the pandemic to push online lessons from A People’s History of the United States, a popular Marxist textbook by the late Howard Zinn.  ZEP materials have a transformationalist agenda.

In 2019 Dr. Grabar published Debunking Howard Zinn (Regnery, 2019), a book that reached bestseller status on Amazon.  She exposed Zinn’s A People’s History as a fraudulent anti-American polemic masquerading as history.  Among ZEP’s most recent initiatives are online mini-classes led by radical professors and teachers, lessons who claim that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is due to climate change.  ZEP’s recommended podcasts include material from The 1619 Project, Democracy Now!, and Public Radio productions.  ZEP is also one of a hundred partners of Newsela, an online educational platform whose radical agenda adapts news stories from left-wing sites to grade levels and distributes them to about 90 percent of schools. Newsela was created to meet the demand for more nonfiction reading in English Language Arts classes, per the Obama administration Common Core guidelines, which Newsela’s founder helped to design. Recently Newsela offered six grade-adapted lessons from ZEP.  Although Newsela and ZEP are offering free products during the pandemic, Grabar points out that these labor-saving lessons are intended to lure teachers and administrators to long-term dependence on ZEP’s agenda. Taxpayers will then fund the increased dissemination of Zinn’s Marxist lessons.
